East 20th Modernization of Vancouver Special - Vision Built Construction

2014 Georgie Award Finalist Renovation Over $800k

The goal of this modern twist on a Vancouver Special was to retain the basic structure of the home but introduce higher level elements of design and current building technologies.

Respecting the original architecture is reflected in many elements through out the home. A good example of this is the skylight that runs through the centre of the house and uses the existing trusses to create individual light wells.

At a modest 2600 square feet custom built in cabinetry throughout is used to maintain the clean modern design and maximize storage space behind cabinet doors.

On the north elevation a large 9 foot glass sliding door opens up to allow for greater indoor/outdoor interaction and allow for increased light and openess into the kitchen and dining areas. Great for parties on hot summer days.

The interior stairs are open treads allowing for greater light and feeling of openness.

The rear carport with cantilevered roof allows for parking on one side and ample bike and other storage on the backside. The doors are cladded with cedar batons to seamlessly blend into the siding.

1/2” reveals in baseboards, door trims and around cabinetry are consistent throughout the home showing off the sleek minimalist design elements.

Caeserstone countertops with mitered waterfalls contrast the natural oak millwork.

The concrete floor was ground down to give a terrazzo appearance that also balances well with the design intent.
